The counter top is reclaimed slate from a school. We bought the slate at the ReStore in Seattle but many salvage stores carry things like this.
The slate is glued to the 3/4" plywood top of the cabinets. We cantilevered the slate about 12" without support and it has
has held up ok although there is some flex that is making the wall to slate caulk stretch a little too much. For larger cantilevers we recommend letting in a series of flat bar steel supports to the cabinet carcases.

What do you use in the seams of the counter ? How thick is your slate? Can a slate front edge be glued to the top edge to make it appear thicker?
