The fireplace surround is made using reinforced concrete. The striation you see is from the form used when the concrete was poured. Yes it's concrete. It might possibly get hairline cracks which is normal and should be expected - though these are pre-cast panels formed in a shop and brought on-site. They are by Flying Turtle in California and are
smooth concrete and extended bench seating.

This is actually a stained concrete. The floor is not perfect becuase the house was remodeled, but it is cool looking!

The surround is a concrete paver. It's from a Texas based company - Stone Creek Pavers and the color is dolphin
hoping we could create a similar look (in dark choc?) ....my bubble popped. As I'm considering stained concrete for our lower level recreation/guest quarters and I also want to consider concrete (with some interest - color or imprinted maybe!) for some of our exterior passage materials. Darn! Thanks
