An ocean view on the coast with boulders as patio seating. The rocks encircle an outdoor fire pit, and are on flagstone pavers
What type of flowers are growing in between the flagstone?
What was the design idea behind placing the boulder seats in such a way that people would have to sit either with their backs to the ocean or to the firepit?
I think it's also because it is trying to flow with its surrounding. Boulders become part of the water.
Flagstones, which is what you see in the photo, come in a variety of colors, depending on what area they came from. Find a stone supplier

Berlin, WI backyard features a Bluestone patio with Germantown paver border, a spacious firepit using Winnebago boulders and a custom water feature, nestled among existing Austrian Pines. The patio is framed with ornamental grasses, Japanese Maples and Winnebago outcropping boulders to create seating stones

You will likely flagstone described as thick or thin, and which one you should buy depends upon how you want to use it. If you intend to lay a flagstone pathway without mortar, you will want to get thick
Practical ConsiderationsHow it's sold. Flagstone, also called patio rock, is sold by the ton or by the pound, not per piece, and the price varies widely depending upon what type of rock the flagstone is. You can expect to pay anywhere from $140 to $320-plus per ton. The more exotic the rock, the higher

This patio is full of interest. Why? Because it exemplifies juxtaposition. The boulder rises from the stone patio like a volcano rises from the sea. Both the boulder and the pavers are related by means of material and share similar colors, but they differ with regard to size

how do you get the water to flow evenly over the edge of the flagstone
Really impressed with your work. It looks so natural. NO obvious flagstone shelves for water to run off. Keep designing beautiful ideas
There is no flagstone in the waterfeature. We use boulders for the falls. To get the water to flow evenly we level each rock to ensure that water is properly displayed over the rock.
