wood, with a fairly dark stain. I really want white built-ins like in this picture, would painting the built-ins look unattractive? Same with the baseboards throughout the house, they are a dark wood stain, but would really prefer white, to paint or not to paint? Thank you, Heather

to consider replacing them with pre-primed and pre-painted baseboards, since sanding old paint, priming and re-painting is quite labor intensive. A good piece of advice I was given was to never be stingy with the width of baseboards and window and door casings. It helps to be handy and have a nail gun

There are several ways to achieve a look similar to this. I'd suggest using two paint colors, both flat latex. Apply the first color
like, you can then use a glaze over the top of your piece....a chocolate glaze is always pretty. Glaze will help you move the paint around easily, but you can also use one part paint to 4 parts water. Brush it on and use a rage to wipe off excess. Hope this helps.
