@40portico - Where do you live? Are you in the DC Metro? Not all garden centers carry railroad tie timbers, but I would be happy to help, if I can!

what are the steps made of?
These steps are made of timber, most likely 8x8 western red cedar.
This is gold decomposed granite quarried in California. It is a blend of gravel from 1/4" & smaller all the way to dust. This is compacted over an additional base rock
railroad tie steps, integrated into slope and boulders, good CA native plant choices
If we can't afford any better - railroad ties?
Railroad tie steps with DG between and dry stacked boulder retaining edge.
All garden styles can benefit from the addition of rock. Here a more traditional cottage style garden uses rock slabs to create a hillside planter.

We used a free form vine we harvested from our woods as a handrail on these garden steps for a small Buckhead garden.
picture until you find someone willing to make one for you. We also build custom furniture for clients, so if you can't find a builder seek out a furniture craftsman. John

Paces Construction Company in Atlanta has harvested several vines like this from local woods and installed them as garden railings. Each one needs to be custom fitted to the space, and we carve supports with a chain saw to properly mount

The Massets have added accentuating details that might go unnoticed to the eye because they correspond beautifully with the surroundings. Note the railroad tie border around the terrace, and the old cut stones around the tree.
I was wondering what company makes the furniture in this particular patio photo, but I do not know how to distinguish ithat photo from another. It is an outdoor view with the wood sofa with white or light tan deep cushions facing a gas enclosed fire place with a chair and greenery
The question remains unanswered. What material are they made of.

Did you stain the railroad ties? And if so, what color? thanks!
Earthworms are extremely beneficial to any garden. They help keep the soil from compacting and draining properly.
gravel, huh? This perennial favourite is popular for a reason: it’s low maintenance, practical and looks good, too. Accessorise with rustic garden furniture and raised flower beds, and voile! The perfect low-key garden just in time for summer.

are the treads supported? From the bottom or top?
that is very hard to arrange furniture, it's shaped like an L, any suggestions? I want it centered around the fireplace.
Railroad tie staircase- would love it with a runner
Choose something out of the ordinary for the actual stairs. At the end of the day, the stairs are simply horizontal planks that can be made from a variety of materials. These wood blocks are a great rustic complement to this modern home.
