is the roof engineered to hold?
I'm no green roof expert, so take what I say with some skepticism. The goal is to keep your growing medium as light as possible. That's why I used lava rock for the base layer. Also, compost is fairly light as well. It's the sand that's heavy. I believe all the growing medium was about 2000 lbs. and we
on the roof. Our mix was designed to grow sedum plants which like dry soils. As far as the footers/piers, I can't really comment too much on that b/c each part of the country has different rules/laws regarding that. I usually dig footers at around 30" and the soil MUST be undisturbed compacted soil

Maximizing garden space with roof gardens
for a green roof, there should be no problem for a new home to meet the structural requirements. For retrofitted green roofs, you have to be a bit careful. This is called a Green Roofing System, it actually makes roofs last 20 years LONGER than normal. It is very popular in Europe and places like Germany for the roofs of Skyscrapers. If you search Green Roofing Systems you will see the make-up of the roof and companies etc
that the roof in NOT rotten, but meant to look this way and has been inspected thoroughly" other wise buyers might just not be interested.
it's a green roof. There is a membrane on the roof before the growing medium is placed on the roof. This type of roof construction is becoming more common
love a roof like that. I live on Vancouver Island with lots of rain and trees so old roofs tends to look very similar to this if you leave them long enough. Can't imagine what an "average potential buyer" would think if you wanted to sell the house eventually though. I'd be tempted to stick a sign in
