I love the TV concept. Did you have to consult with an expert regarding the heat ruining the T.V.?

The shallowest gas fireplace that comes to mind that still looks looks a little like a fireplace is the Heat & Glo Soho: http://www.heatnglo.com/Products/Soho-Gas-Fireplace.aspx?page=Specifications It's only 11 1/2" deep. The Solaris is shallower at 5 1/2" deep
They are quite expensive, between 10k and up. They should not be considered heating elements, they will heat the room they are in through radiant heat (they are sealed).

The fireplace featured is actually an outdoor unit spec'd 8 years ago now. There are lots of options for more modern inserts - check out Montego, Heat'n'Glo, etc.
