(Malus x 'Prairiefire') are plainly visible, making pruning much easier. Winter pruning is not recommend for trees that "bleed" in the winter, such as maples (Acer spp) or for plants that bloom on old wood, such as magnolia, forsythia and lilac (Syringa vulgaris).

Prune deciduous trees. Pruning should be done before the leaf buds begin to swell. The exception is maple and birch trees and shrubs that flower in spring. Don't prune them now; wait until they have finished flowering.
