like the idea of a bench or chair separate from hooks on the wall. And maybe use the buffet or another piece of furniture instead of built ins for counter space. Maybe an island to set groceries on etc.
If you have a mudroom or back hallway, consider finding a spot for an old buffet or cabinet that can be converted into a potting station. If it's in the budget and the layout is feasible, include a sink for easy cleanup.
hard wood bench in the mudroom? A loveseat or an armchair would be a charming addition (throw on a slipcover if you're worried about stains), and an old dresser can find new life as an ample storage unit.

Antique Sideboard Buffet turned into Double Sink Vanity
Antique Sideboard Buffet turned into Double Sink Vanity
We purchased this antique sideboard buffet from craigslist and turned it into a double sink vanity. The three doors on the front made it perfect for a two sink vanity. The middle cupboard is all usable space and there is lots of storage in the other cupboards under the sinks. We put Travertine tile on

Using old furniture for a vanity
for your vanity will dictate the style of the space. For instance, repurpose an old painted washbasin or pine commode for a country look, versus an elaborate carved mahogany piece for a more sophisticated approach. In this gorgeous French-inspired kitchen, an elaborate buffet makes a très chic island. The green marble top was extended at the back to make a counter with storage space for two stools underneath.
the back, making it even more useful. Having a countertop made to follow the lines of the piece gives it an especially nice, custom look. Prices for buffets are all over the place. You might be able to find a small one for under $100, but the bigger, more ornate pieces can go for $700 and up.
