The iron cross was designed as part of the overall gate design. The goal was to compliment / match the wrought iron on the house, provide a more overall open feel to the gate, and also allow for a 'see through' for the Client when they approached the gate. So the iron

Can you please share what the counter stone is? Beautiful design...
You don't want anyone sitting behind a hot smoky grill, and you really need an overhang to be able to tuck your knees under the surface, just as the designer has shown in the island with the umbrella. A standard dinner plate is about 11" across, so I like a 16" deep surface to fit a plate and a drink,
