I cut them back the woody areas were larger than the flowering areas - what did I do wrong?

the white flowers in front are annual vinca (Catharanthus roseus), sometimes called Madagascar periwinkle. The purple spikes look to be annual salvia 'Victoria', and the tall orange flowers I think are annual Mexican Sunflower. All thrive in full sun.
I think the orange flower is an annual called
(Tithonia rotundifolia). Planted in spring after all danger of frost, it can easily grow to 6' tall in a matter of months. It's a great plant for cut flowers and attracting butterflies, especially Monarch.
