Looking for ideas for the area under my stairs

kirstieparker6 August 2014
There is an old and dark bar area under my stairs that never gets used. Does anyone have any ideas on how to renovate this area into something useful?

Hidden closet or bookcase/door would be useful to hide "stuff".

Yes, I agree with Darzy - some sort of built-in. You could do drawers, which would be fun, or you could do a wine rack built into the area. A combination of cubbies and drawers would also be cool.

I would put a bookcase or cabinetry that aligns with the rest of the stairs. Extra storage!

You can make a triangle area to the left side , under the staircase where you can cover it opaque with the wood and you can store your shoes or things which needs to be hidden and then to the right side under the staircase you can place some decorative things like vase with flowers or any other thing which is eye catching where you will be appreciated and the purpose will be served .

I would paint the timber and change the wall paper into a lighter colour, add some sort of concealed lighting (like a led strip) under the wall hung shelf you already have and open up those wooden panels and add custom shelves. However I would keep it as a bar area though so much more fun!

Is this near your front entrance and do you have a place for storing coats etc? As I love this solution as well:

This is what we done for one client looking to maximise space under their stair-case. It includes storage\laundry. When the doors are closed it hides away this space.

John James O'Brien - Design for Inspired Living
Very nicely done - utilised similar space in a 1914 Edwardian split into three suites, retaining the character with inset panels on the doors. left an exposed cubby in a space similar to that where the red basket is in your photo here, or the under-stair bar example earlier, lit from above for an unexpected display of glass art. Good to see creative practicality!
