I have a new flower bed I want to plant this fall; it is in dense shade. The bed only gets dappled light for a short time. The trees are very tall; their branches start about 20" up and are huge so it would be very difficult to thin out. I want something for a focal point and I L. O. V. E. blue hydrangeas
of my new bed. I will add astilbe, lily of the valley, hostas, ferns all the shade loving beauties I just love. Thank you, Mary
Hi Mary, Since l am not a horticulturist, before answering your question I consulted a very well done book untitled" hydrangeas",by Toni Lawson-Hall, and this is what
choosing a site. The high cover of tall woodland trees gives dappled shade, which is ideal. In such a setting, the hydrangeas flower well, but the blooms are protected from strong sunlight..... Shrubs grown in a woodland site not only keep their flowers well and true to colour, but the colours seem almost

added. A salvaged double cast iron sink was installed in a sturdy cabinet that provides excellent needed storage. An upper cabinet was rescued from the basement and had new crown moulding and light rail added. The beautiful ceiling is original to the home.
access to a similar sink. I wonder if the cabinet this sink is sitting on was ready-made and available at a big building supply store, or if you had to have it custom made. I need to keep it simple and affordable. Thank you.
Nice way to keep a laundry room from feeling like a forgotten corner
prefer a sink like this versus the regular plastic laundry sinks
feel like a part of the house by adding unique touches. This laundry boasts a beadboard ceiling and exposed brick. (Not to mention beautiful windows and floors.) What have you done to make your laundry room more fun?

We are moving a Stanley wood stove into our new kitchen and are wondering how to approach the non combustable
Is this a combination wood/gas stove?
We have an 1844 New England farm and we are looking to add a heat source to our kitchen. We are thinking of adding an antique wood/gast cook stove to our kitchen. Thank You.

look in a 13'8 w x 12'8 L kitchen?
Hi, I have been trying to recreate this kitchen in my new build in Louisiana. The space is a 13'8 w that has a door on each end like the oven/fridge area and 2 additional walls with a length of 12'8 one is for the sink area with windows and the other is the range
open to a nook. I'm hoping you can give me some direction on how to recreate this space with an island on those dimensions. Please and thank you!
that also houses the range. What is behind them? Thanks for your time.

What a clever idea. I don't have pets, just kids. But it could make a great kids' pantry. Love the design.

neighboring houses are edited out focused instead on distant mountains. While the residence presents an unassuming, modest scale to the street, it steps down with the slope of the site allowing the spaces inside to become quite generous. Oversize pivot doors and large expanses of glass allow abundant light

of four buildings: the main house, the garage, the guest suite and the office. Large windows maximize natural light inside, while large overhangs protect the interior from the desert sun. The overhangs and the pathways create connections between the separate buildings, making them all part of a whole.
builder must build to the size of the shoji, not the other way around. Makes for a real issue if it's a remodel and you aren't building everything from scratch... If there are existing openings, the shoji must be custom built to that size. Another big issue with the pre made shoji sold on the internet is that
which is a laminated paper; ( .020mm thick), like Ty-vek. Never is tight on the kumiko grid and expands in heat. Or worse, they use "syn-skin"; a fiberglass material that is porous and has a low light translucency. It also is not really washable and the pores collect dust. One other way a prefab shoji
Using a valance box with the track inside or using the barn-door type track hardware. It's not perfect, but if the opening is near the size (smaller!) than the shoji it's-self, it may work well. I always size my custom doors to have a 1-1/4" lap (bigger!) on each side for privacy. More or less may work
