Thanks for the input; Keeping the glass door panels? Find an Oriental runner to install over the stair, then for inspiration draw color from the rug to choose paint. You may want to save the rods if they're nice as they can be pricey. Lighting can change everything: Clear glass pendants range in price and style to fit anyone.

An accent wall is always nice and can add punch to a room. Or, like abigail said, you can get an oriental runner for the stairs and then draw color from the rug, but instead of just one color you could also sponge paint. That always looks nice. Perhaps even going so far as to changing your flooring. It's a bit dark. Wood floors are always nice or even a light-colored tile would really brighten it up.

Thanks for the advice! The floors are very dark, but they are porcelain tile and run through a large part of the house, it would be a hug job to change them

Okay, well then, perhaps a light-colored area rug to offset it. That would help brighten it up...perhaps one that will match the runner.
