a not so big addition - the exterior
The existing 1970's era neo-colonial's kitchen area was expanded with a 5' x 26' cantilevered addition. This addition, with a new steel beam to support the 2nd floor buried above the ceiling line, was cantilevered so there's no foundation. This allowed us to save the tree directly outside. Visit

Using a cantilevered micro-addition is a great way to add just right amount of space to a basement apartment. In this project, a 5' x 25' cantilevered addition provided the room

doesn't cover usable space, like the other examples above. It reaches out over a steep hillside that would be very difficult to build upon. Hence a cantilever is the logical choice. Here it houses a kitchen/dining area and an adjacent outdoor deck overlooking the tree-lined hillside.
... making a strong statement about the house in relation to its landscape. The terrace at the tip of the cantilever offers and experience like sitting in the trees.

deep addition. This was all the space that was needed and was dictated by the existing tree that we didn't want to take down. The addition was cantilevered, eliminating any foundation work that would have affected that tree roots. We sacrificed some wall cabinetry so the new exterior wall could be

cantilevered stairs for access to upper greenspace
This last example is included to illustrate that cantilevered stairs can also be used in exterior applications. These concrete steps project from a cast-in-place concrete wall, and they float above a wood deck. Here the structure is hidden in shadow, as most likely intended, but the effect is sublime
