The ideas and designs of that time will never fade away. But the trend of creating a period-piece room will. We will always have Danish modern and Nelson lights, but I don't think there will be quite so many rooms that look like Mad Men sets in 20 years.

This interior is basically mid-century modern, yet the striped upholstered chair, round mirror and traditional rug add more layers. The brass reading lamp and dark wood tables add an Americana feel to the otherwise Scandinavian digs.
By some standards, this living room may be considered on the smaller side. However, that feeling is avoided entirely by contemporary furniture with exposed legs. Notice how the armchair’s design is reflective of a typical sturdy build, yet when juxtaposed with the thin legs of the tables

If you have to use an engineered wood, maybe you could use one that has a similar look to polished concrete. Polished concrete is quintessential mid century as all of the Eichler homes that I've seen have concrete floors. A grey toned engineered wood might look really nice.
