the smallest you would go is about one half the width. The largest you would go is 12 inches less than the width. For example, if you table measures 44" across the smallest I would go is 22" the largest is 32". Normally a safe range for a table that seats 6 is 25"-30" in diameter.

I am going to do something similar to this with stools on both sides but I would only have 44 inches between counter and island/table. Do you think that would be too tight?
