if only heat from ceiling, does it stay warm enough down below to keep that wood floor from contracting?
It all depends on the temperature you set for your furnace. And wooden floor do not contract but expand due to excessive heat. From this image the size of the room is not clear so it is not possible to tell whether heating from ceilings will work or not.

tell me if this sort of grid pattern with stone/tile and wood is hard to execute? I have been told that it is difficult because of the expansion/contraction of the wood with the mortar joints. Thanks.
There is some expansion/contraction but mainly the wood just needs to acclimate on site prior to install and there needs to be some caulking at the stone/wood joint.
