Horizontally oriented pine planks are a contemporary take on traditional beach cottage beadboard. They create a cozier area for the bed, serve as a visual headboard and make the space appear bigger. See the rest of this home

The existing 1940’s cottage situated in Co. Tipperary was in dilapidated condition. The brief, to refurbish and extend this cottage to become a functional living environment. The proposal involved the demolition of the existing rear extension and the addition of three new elements, a living block, glazed
located and orientated to tuck behind the existing cottage while affording a view of the loch and flood plain to the North. Accommodating an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area, while the sleeping accommodation is housed within the original cottage. Large glazed joinery elements and an extensive
penetration and movement of natural light within the living block while light is drawn into the original cottage via folding glazed doors and rooflights. The existing windows to the front of the cottage were retained and preserved. Photo credit: Paul Tierney

Less Lawn More Garden
small fence cottage like garden in the front
This house's style is colonial, so a straightforward traditional landscape might not set it off to advantage. On the other hand, a cottage garden, especially in this rather large space, might be too much. The solution: Combine the two. The lawn, the formal paving to the side of the house and the garden
garden beds filled with shrubs reflect a traditional approach, while the irregular pavers, the picket fence and the blowsy plants behind it add a cottage touch.
Perfection isn't necessary when building a path. These irregular pieces of slate add to the charming, cozy feel of this cottage. The path is welcoming and unassuming.More ways to add curb appeal:How to Pick a Mailbox That Really DeliversCurb Appeal: The Front Door

Open things up. If your cottage is a warren of tiny rooms, consider taking down walls and creating a more open floor plan. Also, if you have a low ceiling in a one-floor cottage, see if you can rip it out and go up to the rafters.
