Which kind of wood was used for decking?
HI there, the cut out in the deck around the tree is so effective. Can this be easily done after the fact without compromising the quality of the edges or must it be done at the time of building the deck? Its so lovely to see something
kind words, this deck was built around the existing tree with the edges being cut once the boards were laid. You could do the same if you were to brace the edges of your cut. There would need to be a frame underneath to support the decking. If you wanted to do this with an existing deck you'd want to pull
pull up the decking boards where you want to put the garden so you can install the sub frame. Hope this helps.

What can I do to protect my new wood deck during the winter and summer?
what kinda wood decking is that ?
This is a beautiful piece of work, wonderful view too. Good job deck builders minneapolis
It is wise to have a protective sealant brushed on your wood before the harsh winter/summer set in. If your deck gets a lot of sun exposure, consider using a wood sealant that has a UV protection agents inside
sealant are better for a shine. Wood stains that have a water sealer and UV protections are better for changing the color of the wood. To protect wood decks or other structures exposed to severe heat and sun exposure, use an acrylic stain with transparent iron oxide or opaque pigments

What is the deck made of and the stain?
Thank you for your excellent question about our Fifties Split deck and its finish. The deck is cypress. Due to its density and natural oil content -- in addition to its natural component cypressine, the very things that make it

I am deciding between a deck vs a patio. Which do you prefer?
Love the multi-hued deck! Sure would appreciate it if you would share the brand/color of the exterior stains
Love the multi-hued deck! Sure would appreciate it if you would list the brand(s) and colors of the various exerior stains. Thank you:)
Did this Ipe deck experience cupping and unevenness?
room around 10-12 inches you have plenty of room for a deck. You just want to be mindful that whatever you choose is not creating more labor (which ups the cost) than would be required for the other option. In short don't put a patio where a deck should be or vice versa. Good luck and have fun

This is a very attractive deck/step design. How did you construct it?
I have a modest level of carpentry skills. How difficult is this project on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being not difficult at all and 10 being very difficult? I hope to replace a deck on my daughter's house with a similar design
a bit of engineering planning to calculate the cantilevers! I also drew out a framing sketch first. Once it was drawn out, it required only typical deck-building skills. joe

Consider how it will look. When adding a deck, it’s best to consider the style and architecture of your house so that the addition either blends in with or at least complements your home. A trained professional will be best suited to make recommendations on deck style, materials, color and more.

Which deck stain did you use here?
Mr. Miyagi: "Show me 'sand the floor'". Beautiful deck but I think of that scene from Karate Kid.
wonderful! Couple of questions. Was the bridge designed with support from below? What size/type of wood is along the edges of the deck?
Hi Susan and Aburpee, From the look of the deck it seems if they used a UV inhibitor Oil. Usually Ipe doesn't take staining well because of its density. We usually recommend
Messmer's UV Plus. These two oils have worked wonderfully for all Ipe, Tigerwood, Cumaru, and many other hardwoods. Here are some pictures of finished decks. That have used Ipe Oil or Messmer's Hope this helps.
