for what it is worth -- I would recommend using 1 x 10's or 1 x 8's instead of 1 x 12's -- better stability -- but will be more expensive -- more battens+
sorry this posted faster than I expected -- the image I attached shows 1 x 8's -- on this project, sim to the other one, the battens were used for the window
