What's essential for a shabby chic look?

Shabby chic is a brilliant look if you're on a budget, it's all about recycling, reusing and renewing ideas.

How do you get it right though? What should you invest in? And what makes it shabby chic, not just...shabby?

Upcycling a vintage piece found in a car boot sale or local auction by adding a splash of colour, and replacing a few things. OR recycling a discarded piece of furniture and re-inventing it as something else entirely.
A bit like these old doors turned into a headboard...

Sticking to a light and serene colour palette in a shabby chic room scheme keeps it looking like a thought-out design as opposed to a mish-mash. This is a beautiful example of when it works:
