Need advice on types of wall construction and rendering
June 17, 2014 in Design Dilemma
We're about to build an extension and want the look to be clean and modern so fancy white render. But I'm confused about all the different types available and also not sure about wall construction. Want the walls to be as thin as possible (as space is at a premium) but with excellent thermal values. I don't know whether I should be using concrete blocks, aerated blocks, cavities, insulation, thermal render...? And on the subject of render - sand and cement, polymer, through-coloured...? What are the implications on U values, damp, maintenance etc? Please help!

Sounds like you need the help of a contractor who knows the building codes for your area.

Thanks - it's just that I'm a bit of a control freak and am concerned my contractor will just recommend the cheapest/easiest option! After all - he doesn't care if my heating bills go up or my house gets damp in 5 years time!

I would suggest getting 2 or 3 bids on the job. You will learn a lot from interviewing them.
