What to do with this non functional space
June 17, 2014 in Design Dilemma
What do you guys suggest we do with this old fireplace? It's a non working fireplace . It's in the garden level of a brownstone in a rental. How can we use this space?

Build in a bookcase....put a back in the bookcase so it isn't so deep. Or a built in cabinet with doors....either one, since there isn't a mantle.

Find something like a wine cabinet and place it in the space. Either paint the back and sides so they aren't as noticeable or even tile behind the cabinet. Something like this.

I like both of @anndee and @erinsean's ideas. Either use the space for decor, or even decorative storage.

I would suggest adding staggered shelves for a contemporary look, or if you want something easily removable, look for a bookcase or cabinet that fit the opening. I would suggest using the whole space, though, rather than leaving empty space near the top or sides of the opening. If you find or create something that fills out the entire space, it will give it the appearance of built-in furniture and look intentional, rather than an after-thought.

Here's a good example, if you wanted to do the staggered shelving.
