What color shall I stain hand rail?

magdariveroJune 18, 2014
Hello

We are refinishing our wood floors and staining them a dark walnut color. Risers will be white. I feel railing should be dark walnut, but contractor asked if we wanted it white. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Go with the color of the other woodwork in the house. The thing is, you may have to get new railings if they are a different wood to begin with.

Before I read your posting I thought the railing should be white. Because it's a walled staircase it may look like a dark stripe against the wall. I agree with your builder. Good luck!

Personally i like your stairs and railing as is. Dark Walnut to me is too dark and it will hide the woods grain...i.e. dark walnut stain = paint

Can a railing in same color be added on the opposite wall...for symmetrical purposes

Or go a little wild if you are painting the railing and make it a bright pop of color (turqoise or red or ?)...not sure if that suits your style or not but if white feels wrong and dark stain feels too heavy why not open up the palette a bit? ;)

Perhaps a wrought iron hand rail to give it an updated look. Don't line the present flat rail for a home - only seen these in nursing homes along halls.

Thanks everyone. Crown mouldings and baseboards are white throughout the house. Risers will also be white, which will give the stairs a more modern and updated look. Just not sure if it a white handrail would look strange...I think I may go with the dark stain.

While white adds a fresh feel it is not always practical for a hand rail. Can get dirty pretty quickly! I would suggest a dark stain such as ebony. This will add a nice contrast to the area.

for the railing you could paint it according to your decor no need to have it white or dark stained ,if you are keeping that one ,I like it its flat and doesn't take up too much space either , dark floors and staircases are very nice they do show dust more the the light one :)

I lived in an old house that had white trim throughout and all the handrails were also white...they do get dirty but so long as it's a glossy wipeable paint a "Magic Eraser" solves that problem! Here's a photo with a dark rail plus lots of white and some bright bright color.

This is one of my favorite stairscases ever...hand-painted risers...natural treads, white walls, and a dark rail (but it is a round one...as others have suggested, you could update by swapping out the big flat one for a smaller rounded one).

Stain it and if you don't like it, you can paint it later, go for it.
