Paint is one of more economical options to update a house.

I would remove the trim that's above the door. It is more suited to a more formal house.

As a general rule I never like shutters that seem too small for the windows. Sure they are usually all fake. But it should look like they would fit if they were closed...

Has anyone tried to put a porch on the front of a split level? Could you tie the columns into some kind of porch?

to take the 60's look out of the home, i'd consider: beefing up the porch columns; removing the shutters and adding a slightly wider moulding trim detail around the windows and door; remove the pediment above the front door; a new light fixture; and consider a new color scheme...the current green doesn't work with the brick....but then, the brick looks quite dated. perhaps paint it all in a clean new neutral taupe/gray or if budget permits, cover the brick in some stacked stone veneer. also, replace the old fashioned looking shrubs with something smaller in scale with some color.
