How to lay out 12 x 24 porcelain in an alcove tub surround?

Do you mean the mechanics of laying tile or the arrangement of laying the tile? If your question is for the look of laying out the tile, then you can arrange them any way you like ie. all in rows lengthwise/width wise or stagger half way. It's all about what you like.

Brick/offset pattern would have a more traditional feel, stacked (straight grout lines) would feel more contemporary/modern. What kind of tile is it? What kind of feel does your home have now?

Thanks for your comments. Tile is a lovely semi polished porcelain - taupe grey. My dilemma is due to the relatively small space...alcove shower/ tub. I generally like brick pattern but these may be too large for much repeat. I dont want them all chopped up. I guess the stacked look will win. Bathroom is in Maine, kind of a transitional look! Semi traditional but with spare feel. Memoirs Kohler sink, rubbed bronze Grohe faucet. Just having a tough time deciding on lay out for alcove..
