POLL: Which silver screen home would you want to live in?
Emmeline Westin
July 8, 2014 in Polls
We often dream about living somewhere else, whether that's in your neighbourhood, in a different city or abroad.

If you had the chance to change your pad for a fictional movie home, which one would you go for? Let me know your choice in the comments section!
The cottage in The Holiday
Gatsby's mansion
The house in A Single Man
The Tuscan villa in Under the Tuscan Sun
The flat in American Psycho
Carrie Bradshaw's flat in Sex and the City

LOL! Not exactly a house, but I'll take the Tardis - much roomier inside than out (infinite in size for all my clutter) and you can time travel as well. :)

1. The cottage looks like it's going to need the roof repaired soon.
2. Gatsby - who's paying the electric bill for that??
3. Let single men sit on those (uncomfortable) chairs.
4. Yeah... looks nice... but where's the pool?
5. Not even if those Barcelonas were original.
6. No, you don't need to take your stuff, leave it and I'll take care of it tomorrow after I move in!!

Emmeline -- can we have Padme's Lake Retreat on Naboo, aka The Villa Balbianello at Lake Como, Italy? I'd go for that!

Jessica, I agree with you about the windows in the King of Queens! Never noticed that before. What I HAVE noticed- (and what has always bugged me!!) was the set of Designing Women. There's a round turret style window on the outside which would be where Charlene's desk is... Only her desk backs up to a bookshelf thingy. Drives me crazy :)

I don't want Gatsby's mansion. I want the cottage Nick Carraway stayed in!

There are so many better choices you could have used.

O.k. after reading others comments: in addition to Meryl Streep's house in "It's Complicated," ANY house in almost any movie Diane Keaton has made is fab. I always wonder if she had input to the set design :-)

"Tortilla Soup" is a pale copy of "Eat Drink Man Woman," but the family house was soooooo appealing. I also enjoy watching movies just for the sets, and it's usually a good sign that the movie's not very good if I'm paying way more attention to the decor and the clothes than the story.

Finally, I ADORED the house and grounds from "Practical Magic." The kitchen and greenhouse "lab" especially.

Jessica - I don't know if it was the inspiration or not, but it certainly looks like it could be! I know the exterior shots in the movie were actually a big painting and only the parts that were shot "inside" were built as a set.

Marvinone somehow I missed that in Designing Women. However the architectural impossibilities of the hotel in The Shining have been noticed by enough people that entire thesis have been written on the subject and many people have attempted to develop possible floor plans for the rooms based on the movie instead of on how the exterior of the building was supposed to look.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Karen Blixen's house in "Out of Africa". It is a real place and still there. It was too small to film in so the film company built a replica that could accommodate the cameras. They are both there and are museums. I have always been so obsessed I even corresponded with the museum director about the house. Very lovely people.
