Need help choosing a color for my sons room
July 15, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I just finished reading the article on the affects colors have on children's behavior and found that blue is very calming. My son is almost two and gets very agitated and upset easily and is a tantrum thrower. My question was if teal falls in the blue category ? I am not a fan of baby blue, although if teal isn't a good choice I will go with a light blue.

Well, blue is calming and green is healing so I guess you are getting the best of both worlds with teal.

terrij - if colors could fix tantrums all mothers would love it
you want the book "raising your spirited child" = it is so accurate / popular it is in its 10th printing or so in paperback written by a pro who also happens to be the loving mother of a spirited child . .

a true teal is too dark for a kids room unless it is an accent stripe
Maybe go for a tone that pairs well- bm harbor haze
and add a fun teal horizontal rugby stripe on the headboard wall like bm new providence navy providence

If you use teal I would choose a softer, muted shade, no deep or dark colors. I would also paint the entire room the same color, no accent walls or stripes, they can be stimulating.

He's two! Very normal! Try music....maybe a fish tank ( high enough so he can't get in it:).

Why not take him with you when choosing a color he might choose just the right one out of all the blues. Most often tantrums are an attention getter, the next time just ignore it. SW 6464 is a very nice shade and very calming a bit to the aqua side. Keep all the stuff in his room on the calm side and I found with my hyper son a very strict routine as far as naps and bedtime worked wonders and T.V. to a minimum.

Here are a couple Sherwin Williams colors that you may want to explore. SW 6477 Tidewater and SW 6470 Waterscape. Both are in the green blue range and very restful.

I don't recommend putting any living thing in a room of a child prone to tantrums.

Thank you everyone! I appreciate the advice and ideas. I will be purchasing the book on raising a spirited child for sure. I am purchasing my son the Tikes pirate ship bed and a fish tank would be a great idea he loves fish.
