could a regular door be split into two ? how? also could a sil be added on the "top of the bottom half like this door? how? On a budget, just had new doors put in so would like to use those and retrofit, if possible.

A better way of doing a "half door" is to add a half door outside the normal door and have it opening outwards... and let the shelf on top be large enough to rest against the full door.

lucygoosy that sounds like a great idea! do you have any pictures of how this looks, where/how to put the second set of hinges..and how the shelf looks. Having trouble visualizing.

These half doors were used to keep the animals out of the cottages... I guess these days they are used more often to keep kids in.
