Paint color for family room built-ins

We are in the process of purchasing this home and I'm already overwhelmed with oak. I haven't decided whether to paint the trim white yet (husband is against it), but I do know I want to paint the built-ins. What color? The home is a traditional colonial in a semi-rural setting. (I also want to eventually reface the fireplace with stone and get rid of the brass surround. BTW, this is not my furniture, it's the seller's.)

I think it depends on your style of furniture. If more on the modern, contemporary side, I would paint white. If more traditional, leave as is and update by how/what items are placed on shelves and mantel. If you paint bookcases, trim should be painted as well.

Give yourself a chance to live there for a while before you make any decisions.

The oak adds a very warm feel to a room.

It depends on what design style you are trying to achieve. Do you have the furniture's that you will be using or are you purchasing new ones? if your going for a more modern look, painting it in a white or beige color shade would look great. Good Luck!

I'd paint the whole think white and wallpaper or contrasting pain behind the bookshelf for a more modern look.
