Hi vassar1962, I would definitely square off the rounded windows. You could keep the 4 window across or reduce to 3 windows to match the other side of the room. If you want to add another window at the peak of the roof, I wouldn't turn it on a diamond shape.

What is on the other side/outside that window? Could you put French doors in there out to a deck or patio? (the room seems kind of dark/claustrophobic, despite the amount of glazing, probably because the sill hgt is so high).

Sooo the window is off set of the center? Hmm deff ditch the round. Nite mAre to treat. Also bit dated. Keep the windows as large as the outside can Stand. Alsothonk closer to the floor.

groundswell - the windows are over the garage doors and look into the neighbor'sside yard. no space for a patio and the view is so-so.

What are you doing in the other spaces? It looks like a fun project. I really like the house.

For me this is a budget issue. Replacing/changing windows is not a cheap thing to do.

For a cheap fix, put mullions in the windows. You may be able to get them from the window manufacturer, or there are mullion replacement companies on line. The replacements can be flimsy, so get samples. I think mullions will go a long way in taking your 80s windows towards your cottage look with little effort or cost.

If you're set on replacing, I'd try to stay within the current framing -- go in a little, rather than out. It's easy for a contractor to patch in toward the new windows, cutting wider may start adding costs.

On the plus side, you've got interesting architecture, and lots of good natural light!

I would do the windows lower than the chair rail for sure. Squared off windows with a circle above would be nice.
