Need help with bar height. Please.
July 20, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I'm designing a bar with barnwood and restoration hardware finishes. The bar will be 9 feet long with the back of the bar 11 ft. The height of the back of the bar is 9 ft. My questions is....should the bar be 36 inches or 42 inches? I know the typical is 42, but is it becoming more common to make the bar 36 inches?

Main Line Kitchen Design
A well designed bar, even a residential one, will have the bar sink and bartender's counter hieght at 36 inches facing the people seated at the 42 inch bar top. The back wall can be as shallow as 12 inches deep (18 deep would be ideal) with or without countertop. Any refrigerators, icemakers, and dishwashers can go in the 36" high and 24" deep lower level lower level with the sink in it and facing out so the bartender can face the "patrons". Notice the the upper bar can extend back over the lower sink top (this is an extreme example and so the sink is lower than 36") saving space and making reaching the upper top and serving easier for the bartender. No bar I have ever seen in person had a countertop height of 36" and old fashioned bars had a height of 48". These bars often have/had brass foot rests and or stools with brass foot rests with the bartender sometimes standing on slightly higher drainboard above the floor.
