How do you style the room around this headboard?

My son is moving into his first apartment and asking me for design help. He has a black headboard with silver nailhead trim similar to the photo pictured. He also has a black desk. He needs new bedding and could paint the walls. What color combinations do you recommend an any particular bedding accessories, paint, etc?

For a young man, soft blue grey paint would be nice on the wall. I would stick with greys and blue greys for a more sophisticated look. Restoration Hardware has good paint colors in that range. He needs something hung over the bed, a painting or a collection of framed objects. Maybe the pair of lamps could be a shot of color instead of black, like a red orange or a sunny yellow with white shades. I can't see the floor but an area rug would help if he has hardwood. I also like benches at the end of the bed, to create a place for overnight suitcases to go. That could be in a bright color also, to match the lamps of a pattern that has the lamp color in it. Mecox Gardens has a wonderful line of lamps in so many colors. If you don't like the yellow, check out all the colors under Cameron Spitzmiller

Hi DMarie,

Congratulations on your son getting his first apartment -- this is an exciting time for you both! I'm sure he would like something masculine and we have bedding that would be gorgeous with his black headboard. Am recommending a wall color to the right of each bedding set.

Top right photo: Benjamin Moore Metro Gray

The combination in the bottom two photos (gray bedding with light gray-green walls) would be fantastic with sheets, throw pillows or accents that have hues of the wall color.

Bottom left photo: Stonewash Linen Chambray Duvet http://www.thosbaker.com/stonewash-linen-duvet-shale.html

Bottom right photo: Benjamin Moore Sterling

Hope you and your son like these two concepts!

For example, this would be a nice combination of pillows and accent lamps for the Stonewash Linen Chambray bedding and BM Sterling, a silvery grayish-green wall color.

The lamp is Zak Lamp from Crate and Barrel.

Thank you for the great recommendations. I found a few different duvet covers on special. Do you like any of these for the room? I would go with the gray painted walls suggestions.

I think the 1st one is good but I would throw some color into this space all that gray can get very boring

Of the 3, I like #1 the best and agree with Patricia on adding a color;)

The black headboard and black desk will stand out in light taupe and gray schemes: Some ideas:

I like the Contemporary Bedroom photo, especially the Warm Stone paint color on the accent wall. Ok, rethinking bedding now based on posts.

Should I stay away from patterns and stick to solids in taupe or gray and then think of how or whether to add color or stay neutral and add interest with wall art and decor?

Bedding in neutrals and white are timeless. Nothing wrong with patterned bedding. Just add the accents in solids. Echo accents in art, other accessories.
The gray bedding choices you have shortlisted will stand out with an accent colour. Some examples of accent colours:

Ok, here are some ideas if staying with the solid gray or taupe bedding. Like any of these?

He already has this large black and white sailboat framed print. I could use it over the bed or somewhere else.

This is a large canvas print that I can buy at a reasonable price. It is not framed though.

It comes in a clay color too. Which do you prefer of the two colors?

I like the gray bedding with the black head board. Brown does nothing for me. Which does your son like. I also like the idea of turquoise/ blue accents to go with the boat picture.

Ok ladies, good start. Now I will move on to the accessories. Before that, what about the color for an inexpensive desk chair? White or black or another color? It will be paired with the black desk, black headboard and Nubby Gray coverlet.

I would do white for a bit of relief from all the gray and black, as for accessories have a look in his closet to get a hint of colors he likes, I would go blues or oranges with white bedding and white shades on the lamps but that 's me.
