What is the base of the stream made of? what keeps water in?

Good question. I imagine there must be some sort of waterproof barrier under the stone or perhaps the stone is sealed?

Two ways this can be achieved. A pond or stream liner goes underneath everything or the entire bottom is concrete.

ok thanks. thats what I thot...if concrete does it need to be sealed with water stop stuff? (I forgot what thats called!?
