Can you use a vented microwave over a gas cooktop

lforsythAugust 4, 2014
We are building a home and wondering if you can use a vented microwave as exhaust over a gas 30 or 36 inch 4 or 5 burner gas cooktop. Or what kind of venting is recommended and what height above cooktop is recommended. Thanks

Can't answer your question regarding venting, but, if I can "vent" about something else. I absolutely hate microwaves over cook tops. They become a magnet for grease particles and the only day they're ever completely clean is the day you install them and before the cook top is first used. I would install a vented hood over the cook top and find another location for the microwave.

I speak from experience. We had a microwave over the range before we remodeled and it was always covered in grease, no matter how we tried to keep it clean.

I have a vented microwave over my 30 inch gas cook top and it works fine. We take the vents out twice a year and throw them in the dishwasher to clean them. I wipe the underside of the microwave with hot soapy water occasionally when I'm washing dishes and it's fine. I don't pan fry very often though so maybe that's why I don't have problems with grease.

Yes. Our microwave is vented to the outside, just like a range hood. The bottom of the microwave is approximately eighteen inches above the countertop. We find this arrangement to be an attractive, functional space-saver, and have had no problems with grease or dirt as mentioned by previous poster.

It depends on the specs and installation instructions of both the cooktop and microwave. The microwaves only come in a 30" version and the cabinets need to stay a minimum of 30" above the cooktop (even higher for some models). So, for a 36" range, you would have gaps in the cabinets on each side of the microwave if it is even permissible by the microwave instructions. Some models make fillers for the 36" width. It is not advisable to put a microwave above some of the higher BTU ranges because some of the parts wear out too quickly. A quote from one model; "The product should not be installed over any cooktop or range with a combined BTU greater than 60000 BTU."

A 30'', yes, but there are much better choices. A 36'', practially speaking, no. It's the worst combination for convenience sake that I can think of. It functions poorly as a vent, and is unsafe to use as a MW for a majority of users. Plus, electronics seldom are happy being bathed with steam and heat and have a short lifespan as a result.
