They look like they must be reclaimed beams of some kind. Maybe even railroad?

Has the wood in the beams been treated in any way? We have just placed some reclaimed heart pine in our kitchen as columns and are deciding whether to stain or oil them, or leave them alone.... They just had paint removed from them, so they look freshly milled right now.
