how come there is no lip/ step going into the shower? How does the water not spread to the rest of the floor?

Floor slopes properly to the drain....research curbless showers.

Great question! Motherbear is correct. In order to achieve a shower with no curb it takes a sufficient amount of space and plenty of pre-construction planning with your contractor. There are many factors that come into play while determining; structural elements, space between floors & joists, enough room to slope floor to the drain, etc. This set up happened to have multiple shower areas, this one being the steam shower with little water to splash about.
