Need help with kitchen island

We had an island custom built to serve multi purposes including serving a buffet, preparing food or working on craft projects. The island sits under an i-beam running east/west so the carpenter also dropped the ceiling running north/south. However, the kitchen end of the island is too far away from the kitchen counter. Can anyone suggest how we might move the island closer to the kitchen side of our open-concept living/kitchen room? Please see the photos and take special note of the dropped ceiling and also where the carpet meets the hardwood floor. How can the island be moved a foot or two closer to the kitchen without having to reconfigure the dropped ceiling and floor?

Pull it closer and add some bar stools on the end ,it will take up the space...or add a hanging pot rack on that on end to take up the space visually

Thank you, Brandi, but we can't turn it the other way because of how the carpet is cut around the hardwood floor/island and because the island is too long to allow two people to pass if placed east/west. Any other thoughts?

Could you have a carpenter build an extension, which can be raised or lowered. Or add a permanent that has a granite top.[houzz=Country Kitchen- Ancaster, Lincolnshire]; [houzz=Traditional Kitchen]

This has great possibility. We could move the island closer to the kitchen counter but add the extension on the living side of the island (as pictured) with two occasional chairs. That would make sense with the carpet laid as it is. We would have to extend the dropped ceiling on the kitchen side... right?
