Help! 70s tile bathroom

captainjukiAugust 20, 2014
I just rented a new home and the bathroom is great, very spacious buuut its all tile. Every single wall. I have no idea how to decorate it nor what colors to use for accesories shower curtain, rug, towels etc. I could really use some help. Thank you!

My first reaction, was did Stevie wonder live here? Only a blind person would have picked these colors. I suggest providing guests with a sharpie and playing connect-the-dots.

I hope that helps.

If you are renting the place, you're probably limited to what you are allowed to/ willing to put into it. Perhaps putting up a white shower curtain with a nice texture to it would dampen the colors a bit when closed.

When I moved into my place it had pale yellow bakelite tiles with black trim. I HATE yellow, but there wasn't much I could do about it as a renter. So I decided to just make the bath as fun as possible. I got a shower curtain with a several different colors in it and then bought whatever rugs and towels went with that. They did a good job of distracting from the yellow walls.

In your case I think I'd go with a southwest/Mexican theme. Orange, terracotta, maybe some bright dark blue accents. Sunflowers? If you can't beat it, play with it, I say.

Since it's a small space, I would go with white or pale yellow or cream - get the right shade directly from the tile. Keep the shower curtain closed to reduce the amount of crazy tile shown.

I'd use dark solid green and blue accessories, same colors as in the accent tiles. White would look nice, but after my own sorry experience, I'd never recommend white towels.

I must be the oddball here because my first reaction was "this is fantastic...it's just so way cool". I once lived in a 1928 Mediterranean style house built like a fort. The tile colors were outrageous and wonderful. Of course, old tile is always going to have more character but still, this looks pretty good. The house was 7,000 sq ft with about 6 bathrooms. I have to stop and think... but one of the "jack and jill " baths was mustard yellow and black with the original tub, sink and tankless toilets. Oh, what a great house and this one you have seems to have some guts and character too. Go with it! Seriously, if you try to hide it, it's not going to work. I would accentuate mainly with black(unless that is dark navy or something else). The kelly green is fun and goes very well against the terracotta floor tiles you have so bathmat would be easy and towels. Get a black set and a green set so you can mix and match or have all fresh at the same time. That's a pretty creamy colour in your accent tiles in the background. I personally think it's great and I think it will be easy to accessorize. The tile is already the focal point, all you have to do is the "sides". Lucky for you that many things are incorporating the medallions in their design.(And another thing, that's an expensive bathroom. Tiling walls is not cheap) I just hope that you can look at it and know that you have something unique and the 70s are returning. I'll see what I can find for you...do a little shopping ; ) Captain, are you male or female?

I don't know if this shade of greenish blue would work for you but at least it will give you an idea of how beautiful this can be!

Here's the last place for now. You can't lose having this tile and incorporating it into your accessories. I don't know if this is a master bath but bedding, pillows, wall hangings, rugs are so great looking and your bath could take the lead.

Good luck with this because you are one lucky person. It can be so gorgeous and fun.

Thank you so much everyone for the help. I love the bathroom its just hard to imagine the accessories. I think all white is boring and i will not be going this way. I bought a white shower curtain but honestly white with these colors looks just so blah so i will be including the colors in the design and see what i can do from there. I will upload a photo when im done. Thanks again everyone for the help.

Tone it down, use white

If you really wanted to, you could paint the tiles a neutral color

If you're set on having a color---no white---a deep royal purple or blue would look nice. Keep us posted.

Hi, the tile is cool. I would choose whatever color is inside the medallion, navy or black. Have fun!
