what to do with this empty space?!?
Kate SheppardAugust 26, 2014
The previous owners pieced used cabinets into our kitchen, I think this spot looks awkard. Any ideas would help, I thought maybe some open shelving, people have suggested adding another cabinet but then the door to the corner cabinet wouldn't open. Help! What would complete this kitchen?!! Thanks (ignore the hole in the ceiling, the shower upstairs leaked)

There are many wire shelving units that could hold a variety of kitchen items like spices. Lately I have been seeing racks made of chicken wire at West Elm but even shallow shelves in metal or wood are fine. I bet three narrow shelves that appear to float (meaning not end to end) would look great. Also, I suggest aligning the bottom one with the bottom of the right hand cabinet.

You could take the doors off the cupboard to right and add shelving on back wall that minics. Or remove the right cupboard and add to both walls for consistency. Adding backsplash will pull both areas together. Or backsplash that whole wall and continue under the cupboards (see second picture on how it was done). Or paint that section with a magnetic blackboard paint - for messages and clipping reminders to. The space above the fridge also looks odd and I would add two large baskets on top of the fridge.

I think I would remove the cabinet on the right then add open shelving around the corner. If you need the closed cabinet put a framed poster on the bare wall.

You can probably get the same cabinet and re-design the whole corner. They look like thermofoil cabinets which available everywhere.
If you take another picture standing back and show more of the corner so you can see more space on both sides, I can draw something up for you.

It might look better if you could switch places with the tall cabinet and your refrigerator. Would that work? Can't get a good feel from the picture.

Add a vintage print or painting in that empty corner.

Kate,

I set up a corner based on what I see in the picture you have to give you an idea.

I hope it helps.

Have you considered a shelving unit with a Perforated Metal screen? It could be a way to bridge the space without the need to match the existing cabinets exactly. Our website www.mcnichols.com has many different options for Perforated Metal.

It all comes down to the fact that the existing cabinet is not conducive to adding another cabinet on the bare wall. You either have to replace the existing cabinet or live with the blank wall. How about adding a cork board, peg board, chalk board etc in that spot. If you had a peg board or something similar, you could hand items from it like pans, potholders etc.
