I need help choosing our deck railing.

We have the footings poured, the framing complete and the deck boards ready to go on...for the life of me I can not decide on balusters and rails. There has got to be something other than the "jailhouse look" or glass. My town won't allow horizontal rails and I would like to not spend $500 per 5 ft section.
Our house is a ranch style that I am slowly trying to modernize it's look. This deck dilemma is killing me.

Have you considered wood framed pig fencing ( also called hog fencing). Google or look in the photo section of houzz to see examples. It has a nice modern look.

That is what I really want! I tried to get my towns building inspector to agree to this and he said no. Not allowed? I am not sure this is because it hasn't been used in our town yet or it is not allowed for code reasons. I am frustrated. My sister says everyone in Seattle uses it.

There are several types of wire fencing. Many different guages of wire. If it comes in a roll, it is generally called fence. That won't work. If it is stiff and strong enough, it comes in a 20' long sheet called a panel. Without knowing where this is located, we can't tell you much about the code there.
