Mixing Cabinets

Hello. I've been following Crisp Architects and really like what they do. I recently put in my kitchen for discussion in Design Dilemma. I am the 70's Sponge painted blue kitchen. My cabinets are very sturdy but plain. I think I can add some features and then paint/glaze to get this kind of effect. But I really want to change to bottom cabinets and add an island and add cabinets to the other wall where there is none. Any thoughts of how to add but still make it flow together?

Thank you! Do you mean in terms of finish or layout?

Finish. I was thinking of adding molding to the top cabs and doing something like this. Then getting RTF cabinets (for layout) and replace the bottom cabinets, but they will be so different. Then I thought maybe even a darker wood or white on the bottom. Could the molding be different from top cabinets to bottom cabinets? Thank you!

I would make them the same color and moulding ties it all together

Hi Leslie, it really depends on the styles of cabinet you are trying to mix, do you have photos of the existing and the ones you are planning to replace with ?

In kitchens where there are two different colors used on cabinets, my preference is for lighter color to be on perimeter cabinets and the darker color to be on island. For example, milky white painted cabinets with blue island. I would prefer no more than two colors in a kitchen. Again, just my preference. More than two colors can feel choppy, but this also depends on the size of the kitchen. Hope this helps. Charmean Neithart

Dytecture: Here are the pictures - One is actually my current cabinet that I was thinking of adding some molding and the other is the unfinished off-the-shelf that I was thinking to add to the other wall where there are no other cabinets. I think I heard that I could detach the molding on the unfinished and then add my own.
