Barn door to bedroom privacy/noise issues
September 1, 2014 in Design Dilemma
We are building a small vacation home and the master bedroom door leads directly into the great room. We want to use a barn door to help it feel more "special" and like it belongs in a living area. But we are concerned about noise and privacy. One option would be to have an additional pocket door that would remain open and out of sight except at night when we need better sound and light blocking. But in order to do that , we would have to trim out the opening, and I prefer the look of a drywall only opening with barn doors. Another idea would be to have a second sliding (barn) door on the inside of the room that would remain out of sight and only used at night. Any suggestions, ideas?

As for privacy it will depend on the style of barn door you use. I don't think sound will travel anymore with a barn door than a pocket door.

Use the traditional design method of locating closets and baths between private and public areas to serve as buffers.

Barn door fits well with the 'cottage' look.

Sounds like you've got a couple of great solutions already. Rustica Hardware has many interesting choices in barn and rolling doors. Certainly you can use a double door (thickness, not width) to block out sound, but unless you have college kids partying all night, you won't need them. When you are ready to go to bed, won't the party be over?
