I would paint the cabinets a creamy white, add new hardware then add a dark backsplash such at they did here. Best of luck!

Create an idea book for a couple of weeks and then you will know better what school of decor and kitchen you are leaning towards. I would go for an all white, any day.

In case you go for a white kitchen do check out the whirlpool white ice collection before you plunge in to stainless steel. It's the biggest regret in my kitchen. Clear and organize the visual distractions on all the surfaces and then decide what it is you really don't like. Look at ideabooks and start making lists of likes and don't likes. Figure out how much you want to spend, etc...

As others stated, start an idea book so you see what you like. You'll find that you're drawn towards certain styles. It currently seems a bit dark, so lighting it up would help. Understand that painting that oak cabinetry will not leave a smooth painted finish but will show the wood grain through. Other options are refacing or new cabinets. Though I'm biased as a cabinetmaker, shop around a little as I've had clients reface cabinets for more that I would charged to custom make their kitchen. (refacing is new doors and a veneer to cover the face of the cabinet). Stainless can be nice, but there are other options too. Good luck
