cover up recessed wall above fireplace

we are doing home improvements on a recent purchase. what should I do with the space on top of this fireplace. I assume that space was meant for an old TV with a big back since the house was built in 1997. I may put a flat screen TV still, but what do I do with that space? the top portion will still show if I get a TV that will be wide enough to cover the recessed wall.
