Why not put on a pair of those shoes that aerate the lawn then walk around the flooring until desired effect is achieved. Or how about golf shoes.

Personally I would let it distress naturally as it will overtime I'm sure. I really hate some of the furniture that I see that is too overly distressed and dinged up purposely you can tell because they have the same marks over and over which I don't care for myself. If you feel you have too distress it a little try using different tools to create different marks.

I like the idea of the speed of using the roller. It can change directions or new items could be taped to it. So far I am thinking of using smaller bolt, fatter and bent nails to give some worm impressions and may use some BBs or tacks grouped together to give some worm hole impressions. They will go through and do some of it by hand. It will be a very light distressing so that new dings and marks after finishing will not be so distressing to me.
