Connie Wersal-LaVelle, Allied ASID As a professional interior designer, i take many things in to account in determining the depth of a cornice. With most custom window treatments, there is no one size fits all. Some things to consider are the overall size of the window. You don't want a cornice that is too small or too large in proportion with the overall size of the window. Also, I think about how high it will be mounted above the casing based on amount of wall above the window treatment, any moulding at ceiling and again, proportion, of window. The best way to get a visual before deciding, is to draw the wall in 1/2" scale and determine what looks right from there. It's all about getting the right proportions!
Waters Edge Blinds and Window Treatments When I stage our custom wood cornices for trade shows, a 2-3 inch depth looks best with horizontal blinds. If I use a cornice with drapery, then a 4-5 inch depth looks best.
