Do you want the fireplace to run across the corner diagonally, like this?

If so, the minimum framing diagram in the installation manual for the fireplace will let you know how much you need. In the instance above, we had to change from a 36" fireplace down to a 32" fireplace to deal with the conflict at the cased opening to the right.

Without looking at a specific model, I recommend about 4' from the corner down each wall to fit a typical sized fireplace.

I agree that corner fireplaces can be very awkward, and most of the time we can come up with a better room arrangement by placing the fireplace on a flat wall, but sometimes the corner is the only place for it.

I never beat around the bush about anything, personally if that was the only place for a fireplace I would either go with an ethanol one I could put anywhere or choose to not have one at all.

Impossible to decorate around? Decorative nightmare? Please be more specific. Depending on the layout of the room, a corner fireplace can be very functional in the overall design. In my case I get the best of everything. A wall of windows, a functional U shaped furniture layout, a corner fireplace, and huge wall for built in shelving/cabinets and a large flat screen TV. The corner fireplace is the focal point upon entering the living room from the opposite corner where the foyer enters the living room. Putting the fireplace on the flat wall would become an obstruction to television watching if the television were placed on either side of it. I wouldn't think of placing the television high above the mantle of the fireplace for functional reasons. Either of the last two scenarios makes the television seem like an after thought in a room where the primary use is watching television.
