painting brick fireplace

i have purchased home with a large brick fireplace which we will use for wood fires. is it ok to paint the brick. i know it is possible to paint brick. have seen pics all over internet but pics usually show something decorative in the fire place, not actual fires. have never had a wood fireplace before so i do not know how hot they get and if the paint will hold up to the heat. would prefer not to need to use high heat paimt as there are not as many color options.

I wouldn't paint it until you've cleaned it good. That should help improve the look of it. I also read a comment on a story a while ago where painting brick was being discussed, and the poster said the grout or mortar needs to breathe, and if you paint it, it weakened it and can cause problems down the road. I have no idea how true that is, but I'd check it out before deciding to paint if it was my house.

I have seen paint specific for masonry, so I would hope that takes into account the breathability needs, but my concern is heat. Maybe I will try to contact the manufacture of the masonry paint and then post the response in case anyone else has the same concern
